WasherAuthority vs Hiring a Web Design Agency

    8 minute read

Disclosure up front: we sell done-for-you websites, so we compete with agencies. We are going to give agencies a fair hearing anyway, because for some jobs hiring one is genuinely the right move and pretending otherwise would be useless to you.

    The short answer

    THE REAL TRADE-OFF

    Custom vs proven

An agency builds you something bespoke, on a timeline of weeks, at several thousand dollars. A specialist builds you something already shaped for pressure washing, in days, for a few hundred. Bespoke is worth paying for when your business is genuinely unusual. Most one truck and five truck operations are not.

    What the money actually buys

Agency pricing is not a scam and it is not arbitrary. A real project usually includes discovery calls, a strategy document, custom design comps, revision rounds, development, testing, and a project manager keeping it moving. That is a lot of human hours and hours cost money.

The question is not whether that process is worth something. It is whether your pressure washing business needs all of it. A five page site for a contractor whose competitors all look the same does not usually need a discovery phase. The requirements are already well understood: prove you do the work, prove you work in their town, and make it easy to call you.

When an agency is genuinely worth it

Do not let anyone talk you out of an agency if you are in one of these situations:

    • You need something actually custom. Online booking with live crew availability, a customer portal, franchise locations, or integration with your field software. That is real development work and a template will not do it.
    • You are a large multi-market operation. Once you are running many crews across many metros, the site becomes a real system and it deserves real investment.
    • Brand is your differentiator. If you are deliberately positioned as the premium option and charging accordingly, a distinctive identity can pay for itself.
    • You want one accountable partner. Some owners simply want a person to call who owns the outcome. That is a legitimate thing to buy.

Where it goes wrong for contractors

    • Generalists do not know your trade. An agency that built a dentist site last month will ask you what pressure washing customers care about. You end up doing the strategy work you paid them for.
    • Timelines slip. Weeks of revision rounds is normal. If your busy season starts in six weeks, that matters.
    • The build ends and the site freezes. Plenty of contractors have a nice expensive site nobody has touched in three years because every change means a quote.
    • Hosting and care fees get bolted on. Ask what the ongoing monthly is before you sign, not after launch. That question applies to us too, so here is our answer in the same breath: $29/mo for the Site Care Plan, printed on our pricing page, not hidden behind a quote.

    The 3-year math

    OptionYear 13-year total
    $3,000 agency build plus $50/mo hosting (example)$3,600$4,800
$6,000 agency build plus $100/mo care plan (example)$7,200$9,600
WasherAuthority Authority, build fee plus Site Care$1,347$2,043

The agency rows are example price points to show the shape of the model, not quotes from any specific firm. Put your own quote in and rerun it.

Notice the two models are the same shape now: a build fee plus a monthly plan. The difference is the size of both numbers. An agency is a large project fee, usually with a care plan on top. We are a build fee from $299 plus $29/mo a month.

The gap here is not really about the website. It is about what else that money could do. The difference between an agency build and a specialist build, spent on Google Ads in your service area, is a meaningful amount of lead flow. For most contractors that trade is the better business decision.

Questions to ask any agency before you sign

    • How many websites have you built for pressure washing or exterior cleaning companies?
    • What is the total cost including hosting, maintenance, and any care plan?
    • What is the delivery date in writing, and what happens if it slips?
    • Who owns the site and the domain if we part ways?
    • What does it cost to change my phone number or add a service in year two?
    • Are you building city pages for my service area, and how many?

A good agency answers all six without flinching. Ask us the same six.

    Who should pick what

Hire an agency if you need custom functionality, you operate at real scale, or brand differentiation is central to how you compete.

Buy a specialist build if you need a site that does the standard contractor job well, you want it live this week, and you would rather put the difference into ads and equipment.

When you should not buy from us

If you need booking with live availability, a customer login, or a real integration with your CRM or field software, we are not your answer and we will tell you that on the phone. Hire a developer or an agency. Paying us $999 for something that cannot do the job you need is a waste of your money and our time.

    Common questions

How much does a web design agency charge for a small business website?

It varies enormously by market and scope, and most published averages come from agencies quoting their own rates, so treat them carefully. The number that matters is the one on your quote. Ask for the total including hosting, maintenance, and any care plan, then compare that to the alternatives over three years rather than on day one.

Why is an agency website so much more expensive?

You are paying for people's time. A typical agency project includes discovery, strategy, custom design, revision rounds, development, and project management, and every one of those is billable hours. That process is genuinely valuable when the project is complex. For a five page pressure washing site it is often more process than the job needs.

Is an expensive website better at getting leads?

Not automatically. Price buys custom design, a documented strategy, and someone accountable to you. It does not buy rankings or phone calls on its own. For a local contractor, reviews, a complete Google Business Profile, and real service area pages usually move the phone more than a bigger design budget.

Should a pressure washing company hire a marketing agency?

For the website alone, usually not, unless you need something genuinely custom. For ongoing ad management once you have steady work coming in, an agency or specialist can absolutely earn their fee, because that is real recurring labor. Buy the site once, and buy ongoing marketing separately from whoever keeps earning it.
